Asbestos is the name for a group of six different fibrous minerals, which occur naturally in the environment. These fibers are impervious to heat, fire, chemicals, and biological degradation. They do not dissolve in water or evaporate, and they have no detectable odor or taste. The asbestos minerals have a tendency to separate into microscopic-size particles that can remain in the air and are easily inhaled. Known as far back as the First century, the term asbestos comes from the Greek word meaning “inextinguishable.”
Many companies expose their workers daily to asbestos – without properly warning them of the dangers or providing them with proper protective equipment. An example of this are the charges that were brought against W.R. Grace for their “knowing release” of hazardous asbestos fibers in the Libby, Montana mine owned by the company. Prosecutors charged the company with a 10-count indictment for the suffering of 1,200 residents with lung diseases and lung abnormalities caused by exposure to asbestos. Twenty residents were diagnosed with the fatal disease Mesothelioma, a cancer that is supposed to be relatively rare.
Malignant Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure. There are three types of Mesothelioma. Pleural Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lung, peritoneal Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the abdominal cavity, and pericardial Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining surrounding the heart.
